One of my favorite ways to accessorize a room and make it feel inviting is to "dress the chairs." When I see a dressed chair it makes me want to walk over, cozy up and read a book. It is a great way to add texture and a pop of color to a space. What does it mean to dress a chair? You dress a chair by adding accessories like blankets and pillows. It is a great way to keep throw blankets in the room for those cool winter nights and add a nice texture or pop of color to the chair. I also love when the throw has extra details, like tassels, embroidery, or some type of pattern. Throw blankets can be loosely draped or neatly folded and draped over the center and back of the chair. In some cases, I have even used really cool oversize scarves, in place of blankets. Here are a few ideas for you. I created a Pinterest board you can follow for ideas. There are a ton of great places to shop for throws. I always check out HomeGoods before I start shopping online. It is nice to feel the fabric and check the quality. Of course if budget isn't a concern, you could always splurge for a Hermes throw! Either way, there are plenty of options for just about any budget. Now for the pillows. I am a pillow girl. There is something luxurious about pillows. So if you sit in a chair in my house, it will likely have a pillow on it. If you have ever sat around chatting with your girlfriends where there are pillows, you will notice they tend to cozy up in the corner of a sofa or chair with them and hug them in there lap. I have no idea why, but yes, it is a thing us ladies do. They are also great for added lumbar support. Pillows can be used as a contrasting or complimentary color. Or they can be neutral and textured. If you love pattern, but are afraid to add it to your space, this can be a great way to introduce a pattern without the costly commitment of a furnished piece. For more added fun, you can change out the pillows throughout the year. It is one of the least expensive ways to change the look of a space. When in doubt choose down! Down pillows are the best. Not only are they soft and squishy, you can shape them and re-fluff them. I recommend purchasing down pillow inserts and then selecting pillow covers to go over them. It offers the most flexibility and if the pillow gets dirty, you can remove it and have it dry-cleaned. The best pillow sizes and shapes are 18x18, 12x18, 12x20, or ball shaped pillows. The best part of dressing a chair, is that you can have fun with it and make it your own. Those final touches are what make a home feel homey and welcoming.
If you need assistance selecting those final accessories for your space, I would love to work with you. You can also send me questions in the comments below.
